Some words about Women
's Roundtable  of Veszprém

 

 

The Roundtable Association of Veszprém is an independent legal person, non-govermental civic woman organisation, which was established as a real „grassroots” association by the strong women of a rural town Veszprem in 1995. We are working under our own organisational constitution.

Our focus issues are:

To promote balanced participation of women and men in public life, equal opportunities, and treatment for women and men, encouragement and empowerment of women, fighting against the invisible barriers and against every kind of violance. To help women to protect their interest, and welfare. We help women succesfully find their place in the new European reality, therefore we focus of attention on teaching and using Internet.

We organise trainings, lecturers, meetings, publications to promote women’s participation in public life, and decisionmaking. We have large connections in Hungary and abroad. All of our members work as volunteers.

Some important previous activities of the organisation:

1997.

We organized the Volunteers Talent Bank.

1998.

We carried out  a project "Democracy" supported by Soros fund and Leuge of Women Voters of      America.

1998.

We wrote and published a book: Nőszemközt az ezredfordulóval. It is about the women's problem during the  transition of  political system.

1999.

We made and carried out a project for young ladies to prepare them for the public life

2000.

A project  for women  of Veszprem county: Women’s statements and life stories for next generations.  (This project is continued, until now  300 women wrote their life and messages, and 400 women  attended the prize giving celebration.)

2000.

We published a nice book in which we selected from the best writings of  women. The title of the book is: Mi visszük át... (1000 copies)

2001.

Project  about the violence against women and children. It was supported by the local  council.        

2001.

Training for the parents of mentally retarded  children.

2002.

 Project for potential  women candidates  to help them  preparing  for the election.

2002.

2002. We wrote  and published a book . Title: Hiányzol, Éva! (We miss you, Eva!) The book contains 77 good pieces of advice for women candidates and 7X7 "wisdom" for women in public life (1000 copies).

2002.

We helped the women candidates during the municipal elections.  (Training,  campaign for women, posters for women. etc....)

2002.

We covered the expenses of the computer studies for our  30 members.

2003.

We made our homepage www.venoke.hu  and we started new topics for women.

2003.

We organised a two days  national conference: Women  in the Heart of Europe-Europe in the Heart of Women.  

2003.

We expressed our opinion on  different  drafts of new laws- latest the  National Civic Basic Law. (NCA)

2003.

We are founder  member of Hungarian Women's  Lobby. It is a  member of EWL (European Women's Lobby) and we established a  working committee for "women's public life."

2004.

We organised programmes for introducing  EU to women and working together with other women organisations (Várpalota, Keszthely) we produced  great events in three towns.  These were  Európa nő! days.  (its a play on words, means both to grow and woman)

We made a cultural women portal on Internet http://sophiaporta.gportal.hu

2004.

We have published a beautiful book written by Mihaly Praznovszky literary historian.It is about famous women of Hungarian history and literature.

2004.

We carried out a project about the actual problems of gender mainstreaming, concentrating the problem of the role of modern men. We wrote a book under the title„We miss you, Adam!”(unfortunataly becouse of financial problems we were not able to publish it.

 

2005.

We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the foundation of our organisation. We appreciated the work of our volunteers and the civic life in our town.. We had a project, a conference and some great meetings about it. .

2005.

We had a film made about oru life, and we collected the memories from the civic organization of our town..

2005.

We made a SWOT analisis about the civil life of our town
We were one of the organisators of the first mother- in- law festival in Hungary in Rátót.
We explored the history of women’s organisations in XIX-XX centuries in Veszprém, and we organised a conference about it.
We took part different national and international women organisations’ work. Our president was a delegate in the GA of European Women’s Lobby in London.
We organised an commemoration to remember the first primeminister Joseph Antall on the anniversary of his death.
We organised our books review in different neighbouring towns ( Pápa, Nagyvázsony, Balatonfüred, Várpalota)

2005.

We have carried out our project „We miss you, Adam!” It was about the actual problems of gender mainstreaming. We organized some very popular meetings in this topic . We have written a book under this title, but unfortunatly, becouse of our financial problems we have not been able to publish it.

2006.

Let speak about Europe . We participated in a movement about how to make the EU’s actual problems popular. We organised a conference about the civil organisations’ and women’s problems in Europe. Our lectures were women MP-s in the EU Parliement.

2006.

Creative women in our town. Ehibition for „amateur” women in the fine arts. Near 40 women’s work were displayed for a month . It was very succesful.

2006.

Great project for the 50th anniversary of Hungarian Revolution in 1956. The project title is:

The dark pearls of our young age” We collected the memories of the survivers of the dark years of Hungarian history.

2006.

We are going to raise a monument to the memory of the women of Veszprém who demonstrated with flowers in their hands against the Russian tanks on 6th December 1956

2006.

We built up connections with Hungarian women in public life in Slovakia and Transylvania. We visited each other and we changed our experiances. We presented them with 200 copies of our adviser book „ We miss you , Eva!”

2006.

Our actual problem is (except our constant financial problems) how to make our organisation rejuvenated, and how to bring younger women into public life.
